A holiday requires both money and care capacity

What we noticed

The Gem Foundation and Four Wheels Travel Fellowship address different barriers to the same often-overlooked form of inclusion: being able to take a holiday. The Foundation can potentially remove a financial barrier through grants that may fund holidays, while Four Wheels removes the intensive care barrier through nurse-led and volunteer-supported travel.

Why it is interesting

This suggests that travel exclusion for young disabled people and families may not be solved by either financial support or accessible accommodation alone. A person may need funding, specialist equipment, continuous care, trained helpers and confidence that support will travel with them. The two organisations occupy different points in that chain: one appears able to respond flexibly to individual costs, while the other has a practical model for making high-support group travel possible.

Why this would be easy to miss

The Gem Foundation appears as an individual grant-maker and Four Wheels as a holiday provider. Considered separately, one can look like a small disability fund and the other like a specialist respite charity. The shared issue of holidays as an outcome requiring several forms of support only becomes visible when their models are considered together.

Could there be unmet demand from families whose holiday plans are blocked by a combination of affordability and care requirements, rather than by either problem alone?
